FROM THE DREAM OF A SUSTAINABLE HOUSE TO A REGIONAL CLIMATE PLATFORM

More than a decade ago, a group of dreamers in Guatemala began experimenting with bamboo as a construction material. It was a risky bet: proposing bamboo housing in a country where cement and concrete blocks seemed to be the only option. However, with each project, it became clear that bamboo was not only strong, safe, and durable, but also offered something even more valuable: hope for transforming communities and territories.

Today, that experience is expanding and taking on a new form. XO2 emerges as the natural evolution of that journey, integrating everything learned about sustainable construction with a new goal: to make bamboo the foundation of a community-based, verifiable, and scalable carbon capture model for Central America.

Why XO2?

XO2 is more than a company — it is a platform that combines science, technology, and social commitment. Our name reflects our mission: to capture CO₂ from the atmosphere and transform it into opportunities for people and for the planet.

In its early stages, XO2 has planted 15 pilot hectares in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, working directly with communities and small farmers. The immediate goal is clear: 100 established and certified hectares by 2026.

But the vision goes beyond numbers. XO2 seeks to demonstrate that every hectare of bamboo can be a natural factory for captured carbon, a source of income for communities, and a reservoir of climate resilience for the region.

Bamboo: an ally against the climate crisis

It’s no coincidence that bamboo is at the heart of our strategy. It is the fastest-growing plant on the planet: some species can grow up to one meter per day and capture up to 80 tons of CO₂ per hectare each year. Unlike other forest crops, bamboo:

  • It does not require replanting after harvest: each cut regenerates new shoots.
  • It adapts to degraded soils, restoring their fertility and structure.
  • It helps retain water and restore biodiversity.
  • It has multiple uses in construction, biofibers, textiles, and energy.

In short, it is a miraculous plant for a time that demands fast and sustainable solutions.

Carbon credits with a human face

In the carbon market, trust is everything. Companies that purchase credits need to know that CO₂ capture is real, verifiable, and sustainable. But at XO2, we believe there is an additional factor: credits must have a human face.

That’s why, in our model, the communities own the credits. Small and medium farmers, agricultural cooperatives, women-led organizations, and rural communities are the ones who benefit directly.

It’s not just about carbon: it’s about dignity, supplementary income, rural employment, and pride in being part of the climate solution.

Technology to ensure transparency

In a market where doubts about “greenwashing” are common, XO2 is committed to maximum transparency. Our monitoring system combines:

  • Georeferenced field photography – each plantation is documented with visual evidence.
  • High-resolution satellite imagery – enables real-time verification of biomass growth.
  • Proprietary digital platform – integrates data to provide clear and traceable results.
  • Independent European certification – XO2 has already obtained the first certification of this kind in Central America for small-scale bamboo pilot plantations.

The result: reliable carbon credits, of international quality, with added value from their social benefits.

From housing to the bioeconomy

The story of XO2 is closely tied to housing. For years, the founding team demonstrated that bamboo could become a competitive material for homes, schools, and even commercial projects in Guatemala. That journey proved that bamboo is viable, safe, and appealing.

XO2 takes the next step: using bamboo not only as a construction material but as the foundation of a new regional bioeconomy. A bioeconomy that captures carbon, restores ecosystems, and fuels a growing global market.

It is estimated that by 2035, the carbon credit market will exceed 500 billion dollars. XO2 aims to ensure that a significant portion of that flow reaches Central American communities, generating prosperity and resilience from the local level.

How to participate?

XO2 is open to everyone who wants to join:

  • Landowners: can register their plots to join the certification program and access new sources of income.
  • Companies and organizations: can purchase high-quality community carbon credits, meeting their climate neutrality goals while generating social impact.
  • Technical partners and volunteers: can support nurseries, training programs, and community projects.
  • Engaged citizens: can sponsor plantings or spread the message through their networks.

At XO2, we believe that planting bamboo is planting the future.

The announcement on International Bamboo Day

On September 18, 2025, during the celebration of International Bamboo Day, Tono Aguilar publicly shared XO2’s vision for the first time. It was not an isolated announcement, but the result of years of work and learning.

“XO2 is our way of scaling what we already know works: bamboo transforms lives, captures carbon, and builds resilience. Now we want to take it to a regional scale, with transparency, community, and science,” Aguilar said during the conference.

That day marked the beginning of a new stage: from inspiring houses to transformative carbon credits.

Looking ahead

XO2 is just beginning, but the path is clear:

  • 2026100 certified hectares of bamboo in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
  • 2030: Expansion to 1,000 hectares, establishing the first Central American bamboo agroforestry network for carbon.
  • 2035: Establish XO2 as a global benchmark for community bamboo carbon credits, connecting Central America with the most demanding international markets.

Conclusion

XO2 is more than a project: it is a call. A call to communities, companies, institutions, and citizens to jointly build a bioeconomy that addresses the most urgent challenges of our time.

In a world that needs fast and fair solutions, bamboo offers the best of nature: speed, resilience, regeneration. With XO2, that strength becomes a driver of social and environmental transformation for Central America.
